Gardener
Occupation:
Relations:
NA
About:
1860 – US Census, enumerated on June 26th, listed him as age 22 a gardener who was born in Germany. He was living in the gardener’s cottage with Leon Geny. The same census enumerated on July 20th had him working at a hotel in downtown Nashville as a gardener and age 18. Most likely this is the same person and within the month he changed jobs.

1870 – US Census listed a Robert Kunze living in Austin County, Texas.

1920 – US Census recorded that the same Robert Kunze immigrated in 1853 and was naturalized in 1860. This man lived in Texas until his death on December 24, 1924 (Fine A Grave Memorial #4426837)

Notes:
It is unclear if the 1870 and 1920 records refer to the person who worked at Belmont as a gardener.

The architecture of Belmont Mansion makes it one of the most significant homes of 19th century Tennessee.

Sold by the Acklen family in 1887, the house went to a developer who began one of Nashville’s early suburbs.

It was then purchased by two women who in 1890 started a college which evolved into Belmont University. Today the Belmont Mansion Association, which was formed in 1972, owns the collection, runs the museum, and shares this unique story of 19th century Nashville with visitors from far and near.
