Washington Irving, often thought of as the father of the American Christmas, made popular the legend of a jolly St. Nicholas and a sleigh full of presents in the 1830s. He was as closely associated with Christmas in America as Charles Dickens was in England. How did Washington Irving set us on our path of Christmas festivities?
