Billiard Room Floorcloth Conservation Begins

While we have yet to raise all of the funds, a significant donation allowed us to begin treatment on the original Billiard Room floorcloth remnant. This rare treasure provides amazing evidence of the 1860s floor covering. The conservation work includes carefully removing the original cloth, cleaning, and paint analysis. Ultimately, this remnant will provide data for recreating the Billiard Room floorcloth.

Kelly Ciociola, a professional conservator, moved to Nashville and opened her own firm last September. Prior to that, Kelly was the conservator at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami. She is a graduate of the Clemson/College of Charleston joint master’s program in Historic Preservation. This is her first project for the Belmont Mansion Association.

The architecture of Belmont Mansion makes it one of the most significant homes of 19th century Tennessee.

Sold by the Acklen family in 1887, the house went to a developer who began one of Nashville’s early suburbs.

It was then purchased by two women who in 1890 started a college which evolved into Belmont University. Today the Belmont Mansion Association, which was formed in 1972, owns the collection, runs the museum, and shares this unique story of 19th century Nashville with visitors from far and near.
