Service Gallery Update
Our work to convert a modern subdivided hallway back into a period service gallery continues.
Pictures don’t do the changes justice. A modern floor has transformed into a 19th century porch floor. The removal of a drop ceiling allowed for the installation of a higher paneled ceiling and classical pilaster topped with a Corinthian capital – both features matching the design of the upstairs gallery, which was also once a porch and later enclosed.
Demolition did expose original plaster along the west wall, which retained original paint colors and penciling. Grace Abernethy, who has duplicated faux painting elsewhere in the mansion reproduced the finish, which is very similar to the faux stone walls in the Grand Salon. As of this publication, Grace is currently analyzing exterior trim colors in the gallery which she will apply at a future date.
In early September, an original exterior gasolier was hung in the gallery to simulate the lighting in this space, though it was not electrified for preservation reasons.
There is still much more to be done before the restoration is complete. Stay tuned!
