Victoria was the oldest child of Adelicia and Isaac Franklin. Victoria died of Croup on June 11, 1846, six weeks following her father’s death and three days following her sister’s death. According to Washington’s Coopers journal he was paid $60 for this portrait on September 26, 1840 when Victoria would have been six months old. The subject is setting with one leg extended toward the viewer with bare feet. This is a pose which Cooper used often for small children. The painting retains its original frame.
