The personification of the four seasons is the most common theme for garden statues from the 18th century onward. The inspiration for this particular statue is unknown. Its’ mate Summer, after Clodion is known only through early College photographs. There are no references to the two remaining seasons. An identical garden statue own by Skelton –St John Antiques [2016] was marked on the front of the base “inverno” which is winter in Italian.
